A former chemistry teacher at a suburban Chicago high school was convicted of pouring liquid nitrogen on a student and injuring him during a botched science demonstration in 2018.

A jury found Garry Brodersen, 66, guilty of of reckless conduct and endangering the health or life of a child on Tuesday, The Associated Press reported.

Brodersen was performing a science demonstration in front of a class at Bartlett High School in May 2018 when he poured liquid nitrogen on a male student's chest and groin area, prosecutors said.

The state's attorney's office said the student suffered burn injuries to a finger and his groin during the botched experiment at the school, which is located 33 miles west of Chicago.

The student has fully recovered, the prosecutor's office said.

Both charges Broderson was convicted of are misdemeanors. The six-member jury deliberated for four hours following a two-day trial before DuPage County Judge Judge Paul Marchese.

'Mr. Brodersen displayed extremely poor judgment when he doused a student with a dangerous chemical during a science demonstration,' DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

The student volunteered to participate in the demonstration, but believed the nitrogen would only be poured over his chest area, not on his groin, the state attorney's office said.

He lay on his back in a classroom before Brodersen poured the liquid onto his chest, followed by a larger amount onto his groin.

A cellphone video reportedly showed the student jumping to his feet in pain after the chemical was poured on his groin.

Nitrogen is a gas that takes a liquid form when kept between negative 196 and negative 210 degrees Celsius (negative 320 and negative 346 Fahrenheit). At those temperatures, the substance rapidly freezes skin tissue and eye fluids.

Brodersen resigned from his position and voluntarily surrendered his teaching certificate in June 2018, said School District U-46, which includes Bartlett High School.

'We acted quickly to address the incident internally, recognizing the severity of the breach of conduct,' a district spokeswoman said in an email to the Chicago Tribune. 

The district board approved a resignation agreement with Broderson in July 2018. 

The Carpentersville resident remains free on bond and is scheduled to return to court March 18 for post-trial motions or sentencing.
