Liquid Nitrogen-Free Cryopreservation For Sustainability

When purchasing laboratory equipment, it’s important to consider the environmental impact of various solution options. In addition to sustainability, re-usability, recyclability, and running costs, environmental evaluations should also include carbon emissions throughout a product’s life cycle.

This study focuses on carbon emissions and running costs of cryopreservation equipment, comparing a liquid nitrogen (LN2)-free controlled-rate freezer with a typical LN2-based system.

Environmental implications of using LN2-based systems include carbon emissions during the system’s manufacture, transportation, and operation. LN2-based equipment also require additional serving infrastructures, which affect expenditure and environmental impact while presenting potential challenges for process scale-up.

Here, the environmental factors of LN2-based systems are considered and compared to the electrical consumption and running costs of LN2-free solutions. View this application note to access data that can support a thoughtful evaluation of LN2-based and LN2-free options, encompassing considerations for the duration of a system’s life cycle.
