About 35 children were injuries as a helium cylinder, used to pump gas into balloons, exploded at a playground of village Birli under Nangalkot upazila in Cumilla on Thursday afternoon.
‘We came to know that 30 to 35 children were injured in the explosion at about 5:30pm on Thursday. The man who had been selling balloons was also injured,’ said Nagalkot police station officer-in-charge Md Faruk.
He said that the locals immediately rushed the injured ones to Nagalkot Upazila Health Complex and then seriously injured ones were shifted to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, about 75 kilometres away from Nangalkot.
Some of the children were discharged from the upazila hospital after giving first aid.
He said that three children were now undergoing treatment at the upazila hospital.
New Age correspondent in Cumilla, quoting Cumilla Medical College Hospital’s casualty department doctors, reported that over 20 children were taken to the hospital until 9:00pm.
